After several years of breeding Canadian Sport Horses we at Freehold Equine have decided that it is time that we consolidate our breeding herd of horses. We are cutting back on the horses who are not suited to our current breeding program keeping only a select few horses to bring us to the next level.
The horses available in this sale are either young colts and geldings who need to move to performance homes, fillies who do not suit the needs of our current breeding program, or mares who have produced well for us and are represented in our next generation of bloodlines.
All these horses are guaranteed sound for the purposes for which they are sold. We offer full disclosure on all our horses—we want them to find the right homes and for their owners to be able to make the best of them in the future.
In order to give our horses the best chance to find the right homes for their needs we are offering all the horses in our consolidation sale on offer. That means that we are not listing and specific sales prices on any of these horses. Instead, if you like one, contact us and discuss what you feel the horse is worth. All offers will be considered. These horses must sell by winter.
Freehold Equine was founded in 1997 when Lydia Kelly (then Freeman) decided to get into training horses as a business. In 1998 our first foal, F.E. Copper Top, was born. Copper was such a special young horse that after a great deal of consideration Freehold Equine’s focus shifted from training to breeding. In 1999 we moved to our current location in Peterborough, Ontario.
After observing the market Lydia Kelly saw a need for high quality horses, capable of competing into the upper levels, who had solid, kind dispositions suited to amateur riders. With that focus in mind Freehold Equine’s breeding stock have been carefully selected for their correct conformation, excellent movement, athletic ability and above all temperament. Our foal are bred to be easy-going youngsters with friendly dispositions and a strong desire to please. So far every young horse from our breeding program has been a joy to train and has had a super work ethic. While they are sensitive to the aids, they are also forgiving of their riders, often being brought along by their amateur owners.
While our oldest foals are still young, several have been sucessful in the show ring. Our foundation stallion, F.E. Copper Top, is currently competiting in the Section II jumper ring on the “A” circuit and competing in the training level of dressage. Other foals of our have shown successfully in the hunter ring, in the dressage ring and in free jumping and line classes. To date all our owners have been delighted with the youngsters from our breeding program and are eager to see what they will do in the ring.
After nearly ten years of breeding, Freehold Equine is moving forward from our foundation stock and developing further generations in our breeding program. It is our hope to create a consistant bloodline that will not only produce the amateur-friendly temperament we strive for, but also be competitive into the upper levels of their selected disciplines.
